Day 5 - Race 1

Finally Garda delivered the goods with the Ora solidly in at 15-20 knots. Up the first beat AUS 793 (Bangers/Gracie), GBR 787 (Alan/Ritchie) and GBR 795 (Barnsie/Char) led out to the right under the cliffs into more pressure and a big header. GBR 791 (Wattsy/Bish) after an average start followed in with good pace. The first beat was really decided in calling the layline back with GBR 787 making the best of it to lead round from GBR 791.

First run paid to go hard left with GBR 787 and GBR 795, delaying the gybe for more pressure but overcooked it with GBR 791 jumping the group with a good run in.

The next two laps were very much a one way race track with the fleet hitting the cliff. GBR 791 extended away to take the win finishing with no kite after overstanding the finish layline.

Second was AUS 793 followed by GBR 787 and GBR 795. With a good finish from AUS 793 and AUS 371 (Rick/Mikey) in 6th, leaders GBR 758 (Tim/Johnny) and contender AUS 375 (Craig/Paul) both having poor results, it was all to play for to decide the champion for the Worlds.

Day 5 - Race 2

With the wind at 20 knots the fleet all realised that right was going to pay. GBR 791 took the committee boat, tacked and lead out to the right with GBR 796 (Nick/Tom) chasing hard with little to chose between the first 10 boats. It was a pretty uneventful first run and the fleet had learnt to head back to the cliffs which was an increasing only one way race track but the only challenge was calling the correct gybe point back to the leeward gate.

Second lap and GBR 791 took the left buoy and led off back to the cliff. GBR 791 tacked first only to be surprised to see AUS 371 who had taken the more middle route to get right back in the hunt. Surprisingly AUS 371 tacked back right under GBR 796 and lead them across the top leg.

Down the last run, everyone gybed left for the cliffs again but GBR 791 took the win after a slightly numerous call to gybe early back to the finish. Second was AUS 371 with GBR 796 taking third.

Back on the beach there was a lot of head scratching as teams tried to work out who had taken the championship with GBR 758 and AUS 375 both having poor last races. Once the calculators had come out the winners were

AUS 371 (Rick/Mikey) in Bang Bang who were crowned 2016 World Champions. GBR 758 (Tim /Johnny) in GBR 758 had done enough to hang onto second with AUS 793 (Bangers/Gracie) in Bonus Bone only one point behind in third.

The sweepstake of the week with 350 euros winner takes all went to Sophie Hunt for correctly guessing all the answers.

A superb finish to the event and another well executed race by the Team – huge thanks to Circolo vela Torbole and all those involved for a fantastic regatta.
